What does CRT mean?
Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) is a type of technology used on old monitors and televisions. It consists of a glass tube that contains an electron beam, which is accelerated and directed to a match -coated panel. When electrons reach the phosphorus, they produce light, forming the images we see on the screen.
How does CRT works?
CRT operation is based on physics principles, specifically the emission and acceleration of electrons. The CRT glass tube is evacuated, that is, it contains no air inside. This is necessary to avoid air interference on the electron path.
Inside the tube, there is a cathode, which is a metal part that emits electrons when heated. These electrons are accelerated by a high voltage applied between the cathode and the anode, which is a positively charged metal part. The electron beam is then directed by magnetic coils to the match coated with phosphorus.
When electrons reach phosphorus, they transfer energy to the atoms of the material, causing them to enter an excited state. Upon returning to the elementary state, atoms release this energy in the form of visible light, forming the images on the screen.
Advantages and disadvantages of CRT
CRT has been widely used for many years due to its advantages, such as the ability to reproduce colors more accurately and the broad view angle. In addition, CRT monitors were cheaper to produce compared to the latest technologies.
However, CRT also had some disadvantages, such as the size and weight of the devices, the high energy consumption and the emission of electromagnetic radiation. In addition, image quality tended to decrease over time due to phosphorus wear and dirt accumulation inside the tube.
CRT today
With the advancement of technology, CRT was gradually replaced by other technologies, such as LCD Crystal Display (LCD) and LED (Light Emitting Diode (LED). These technologies offer advantages such as lower power consumption, lower size and weight of the appliances and greater image of the image.
However, although it is no longer widely used, CRT can still be found in some old equipment such as tube televisions and second -hand computer monitors. In addition, knowledge about the functioning of CRT is important to understand the evolution of image display technologies.
